It was such a special time last year.

And then we both said it to each other last year when it finished and then I just had this weird feeling that it was going to happen again this year.

MEDINA ON BOARD STORY: An exciting rematch of last year's Tahiti pro final delivered big time for surfing fans on Wednesday (August 28).

As in 2018's final, Brazil's Gabriel Medina rode against Australia's Owen Wright, but last year's champion could not claim his third title in Tahiti as his Australian rival produced a magnificent performance.

Wright and Medina rode six-to-eight foot (2-3 metre) waves on the Teahupo'o reef pass in heavy barrel waves.

The two exchanged similar scores until a near-perfect 9.17 from Wright forced Medina into the runner-up spot.

Medina's performance puts him up to fourth in the overall tour championship, giving him a realistic chance of a third world title with four more events to go in this year's competition.

Medina's Brazilian compatriot Filipe Toledo currently leads the overall tour, with Tahiti champion Wright in eighth.
