Johnson widens lead in race for Downing Street

Boris Johnson has cemented his position as the favourite to be Britain's next prime minister.

On Wednesday (June 19), he won 143 of 313 votes in the third round of the Conservative Party leadership contest.

That's just 14 votes shy of an outright majority.

Significantly behind him with 54 votes was Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Then came Michael Gove.

Then Sajid Javid.

Now eliminated from the contest is Rory Stewart, who secured only 27 votes.

The vote took place the day after all five candidates took part in a TV debate, in which the Brexit diehard, former foreign minister and London mayor vowed to take Britain out of the EU by Oct.

31 no matter what - raising the prospect of a disorderly, or so-called no-deal Brexit.

The four remaining contenders will face two further votes on Thursday (June 20).

That will whittle down the contest to just two.

Conservative Party grassroots members will then decide who will become leader, and Britain's next prime minister, by the end of July.
