SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) DONALD TRUMP: "Yeah, I'm pretty surprised." President Trump weighed in Thursday on news that his eldest son was subpoenaed by the Republican-lead Senate Intelligence committee.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) DONALD TRUMP: "My son is a good person.
My son testified for hours and hours.
My son was totally exonerated by Mueller!" The committee called Donald Trump Jr back to answer questions about the younger Trump's contacts with Russia -- even though a day earlier Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it was time to move on from Russia investigation… Now Congressional Republicans are livid that some of their own would keep the Russia probe going.
SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) REP.
KEVIN MCCARTHY "I believe it's time to move on.
I think they have it wrong." Senator Rand Paul tweeted Thursday: "Apparently the Republican chair of the Senate Intel Committee didn’t get the memo from the Majority Leader that this case was closed." The panel, a source says, is seeking to question Jr. about his 2017 closed door congressional testimony on his involvement in a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
Jr told the committee that he was only peripherally aware of talks on the Moscow Trump Tower project, but President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen testified that he briefed Trump family members "approximately 10 times" about the project, and that Donald Junior and his sister Ivanka were among the family members he briefed.
Jr was also present at the infamous Trump Tower meeting in June of 2016 with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer whom Trump Jr believed had damaging information on Hillary Clinton.
A lawyer for Donald Trump Jr. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
