Student Walkout Planned For Wednesday

School safety.

News 10's alia blackburn joins us live in the newsroom.

She explains how students plan to take advantage of the platform -- but not without some conditions.

Some students at terre haute north say they're ready for the consequences for their participation in tomorrow's national school walkout.

That's after their meeting with school corporation leaders this morning.

"last year we had that scare at north and it just really opened my eyes...."

Last year's "bomb threat" at terre haute north vigo high school put a different kind of fear in some students.

"this could easily be us..."

And when they saw the mass shooting in parkland, florida... it was a feeling too familiar -- for these three students.

"we're the next generation and we're not gonna just be quiet and just let things happen."

Sloan pollom -- hannah cervantes and ellie hampton -- planned to do the national school walkout at terre haute noth.

That is until they heard vigo county schools were having "assemblies" instead.

"whether or not this was the intent, we do feel as if it's a means to take away our voice."

The girls sent off this letter to the vigo county school corporation -- asking leaders to reconsider.

They met with superintendent danny tanoos tuesday morning ... while tanoos was not able to go on camera ... he did offer a follow up statement.

He told us -- the students at north "will" be allowed to walkout on wednesday to a designated area outside... however -- they "will" receive a detention for participating.

"you don't always have to be quiet and you don't always have to play by the rules, it's important to speak your mind."

It's a consequence -- they don't mind paying ... if the outcome is using "their" voice so others can have the chance too.

"peaceful protest is always the first step to change and even though we are students and even though it may not get a lot of attention, just kind of standing your ground and making your opinions known is very important."

The students plan to "walk out" around 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.

Tanoos also told me today they are "still" having the assembly.

However -- if someone chooses to disrupt that --- the consequences will be more than just detention.

For now -- reporting in terre haute... alia blackburn -- back to you.
