Middle school students show support for shooting victims

in solidarity with the parkland, florida victims. one middle school in eugene has come up with an alternative to tomorrow's walkout. today, students and staff at monroe middle school wrote messages on 17 giant white ribbons -- one for each of the victims who died on valentine's day. the principal says he thinks the safest place for students is in the classroom... but, they wanted to give them a way to express themselves. ethan hlebechuk/ 8th grade says "just sending out condolences and telling them how very sorry we are that this happened to them and i felt that it was something that maybe we needed to do because they need to know that people are standing behind them with this" stitch mike johnson, principal: 10:58:49 what we're looking to do is give our students an opportunity to express how they feel to the school and families of victims in florida. that's what the demonstration is about tomorrow. we're hoping we can teach our students to reach out constructively. we want them to stay here and be safe at school tomorrow and not walk out. :10 once everyone who wants to has signed the ribbons, they'll fold them up carefully, and send them to the high school in florida. the school is also holding a "stand up" tomorrow.. asking students to walk up, rather than walk out. the idea is to have students walk up to
