In Southern California on Friday, rescue workers searching for as many as 43 people who remain missing three days after deadly mudslides said they had expanded the area they were searching and told residents that is may be weeks before they can return home.

According to officials, at least 17 people died in the mudslides and and warned that finding more survivors in the thick brown mud was becoming unlikely.

At a Thursday morning news briefing, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said that despite hoping to find โ€œmiracleโ€ survivors, "Realistically we suspect we are going to have the discovery of more people killed in this incident.โ€
