My interest in old-fashioned marquee festivals secured me my first job at the Beeb

Carnival and festival mean different things to different people. Most tend to think of Carnival as the mad exuberance of Rio and Viareggio but to me it’s an old fashioned marquee with country music in the parish field. I grew up with the Burren Carnival being the social highlight of the year.
