Investigation launched after serious assault in St Austell

Police have launched an investigation following a serious assault on a man which happened on Tuesday 21 July.

The incident took place at approximately 12.35pm on Truro Road in St Austell.

The victim, a man in his 60s and from St Austell, was assaulted resulting in a significant head injury. He was taken to Derriford Hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition. His next of kin are being sought.

A 27-year-old man from St Austell was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently in police custody. He has been arrested on suspicion of GBH.

Senior Investigating Officer DI Dan Massey said: “We would like to reassure the community that although shocking, this was an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“Local officers responded extremely quickly to the situation resulting in many witnesses being spoken to and key evidence being gathered.

“We will be continuing house-to-house enquiries today.

“The incident happened on a busy road so we are asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and who has dashcam footage to get in touch.

“We are also asking those with private CCTV to contact us if they have not done so already. This can be done online at www.devon-cornwall.police.uk or by calling 101 quoting crime reference number CR/59224/20.”
