These hatchbacks are not too hot and not too cold, fun but at an affordable price

Leasing can be an affordable, practical route into having your own private car, but it's not always easy to tell the good deals from the duds.

The experts at our sister magazine What Car? work hard to find you the best pay-monthly schemes, taking into account mileage allowance, montly outlay, contract length and initial deposit. We'll be bringing you the best deals they find from a different segment each week.

This week, warm hatches:

-1.* *Mini 1.5 Cooper Sport 5dr-

*£1390 deposit, £245 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year*

Squirty fun such as you could enjoy in the sewers and on the rooftops of old Turin. The Cooper’s 134bhp engine pulls strongly and Sport trim brings 17in alloy wheels, sports seats and styling upgrades, making it good value.

-2. Volkswagen Up GTI 1.0 115 5dr-

*£1326 deposit, £221 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year*

Don’t be fooled by its diminutive size: this Up GTI flies along the straights and clings on in corners like the proverbial limpet. The pay-off for all this sportiness is a firm ride, but it is still among the most fun you can have at the price.

-3. Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSI 115 FR Sport-

-*£1139 deposit, £189 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year*-

So similar in feel to the Up GTI, the Ibiza 1.0 TSI FR Sport also produces 113bhp. It goes pretty well, too, but its larger size and improved ride comfort (despite riding on 18in alloy wheels) make this a more practical and everyday affair.

-4. Suzuki Swift 1.4 Sport-

*£1496 deposit, £249 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year*

In terms of power to weight, the Swift Sport starts with the advantage of 138bhp and a kerb weight of 970kg. Performance is sharp, then, and so is the steering. It’s an eager and likeable car, even if in our minds the older one was a slightly better warm hatch.
