
South Africa's police minister suspended over organised crime allegations
Senzo Mchunu - who denies the claims - has been put on an immediate "leave of absence" by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Edward Senzo Mchunu is a South African politician currently serving as Minister of Police since 30 June 2024. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he has been a cabinet minister since May 2019. He was formerly the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal between 22 August 2013 and 23 May 2016. On 13 July 2025 President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on leave with immediate effect pending a judicial commission of inquiry into allegations of corruption and political interference into South Africa's policing authorities, Professor Firoz Cachalia was appointed as acting Minister of Police.
