Chemical Weapons: USA declares destruction of last remaining stockpile in Kentucky | Oneindia News

US President Joe Biden has announced that the country has destroyed its last remaining stockpiles of the chemical weapons at a military installation in Kentucky .

This destruction is a milestone that closes a chapter of warfare dating back to World War I.

Workers at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky destroyed rockets filled with GB nerve agent, also known as sarin, completing a decades-long campaign to eliminate a stockpile that by the end of the Cold War totalled more than 30,000 tonnes.

The United States was facing a September 30 deadline to eliminate its remaining chemical weapons under the international Chemical Weapons Convention, which took effect in 1997.

There were 193 signatories to the 1997 agreement, with abiding countries promising to never use chemical weapons and to destroy all chemical weapons stockpiles.

North Korea, Israel, Egypt and South Sudan are some of the countries which have still not signed on to the agreement.
