Rare bursts of red sprites were spotted in southern China.

Filmed at midnight in Guiyang, the video shows red luminescence clouds shining and flickering in the night sky.

It’s reported that the phenomenon has been caused by a high-altitude electrical discharge, red sprites, during a thunderstorm.

It usually occurs at the top of a thunderstorm cloud about 30 to 90 kilometres above the ground.

Generally, it is about five to ten kilometres wide and lasts about ten to one hundred milliseconds.

The video was filmed on May 9 and provided by local media.
