Beth jeffers: good morning, welcome to get fit friday.

I'm beth jeffers joined in the barre room at the fitness factor, and i'm with whitney brown.

Whitney brown: yeah.

Hi, good morning.

Beth jeffers: and we are, hey, i bet we're going to talk about barre today.

Whitney brown: she's pretty quick.

Beth jeffers: b-a-r-r-e class, and it's a neat class.

So you can work a lot of different muscles.

Whitney brown: absolutely.

Beth jeffers: low impact class.

And it's one of very popular classes across the nation, actually.

Whitney brown: it sure is.

Beth jeffers: there's actually barre studios, and that's all they do is barre.

Whitney brown: and some gyms are now incorporating barre into their group exercise program, just like we are.

And so we offer this as part of our group x program.

And what it is is an instructor leading the class at a barre, you use light weights, so light hand- weights, and oftentimes you'll use just a small ball like that for stability.

What you're going to do is it's almost a fusion, so you don't have to necessarily be a ballet pro.

Of course, i certainly am not a ballet pro to do this.

But it is a fusion of ballet, pilates, some strength training, and then some stretching.

Beth jeffers: right, and most studios or our gym has barres all around the room.

You can use a chair.

Whitney brown: yeah.

Beth jeffers: and that's what the neat thing is.

And another cool thing about it is that you can use a light ball and light weights.

You don't use heavy weights in this class.

Whitney brown: no, no, no, no, no, no.

Beth jeffers: and i think that there's so many people that are in the gym that do our boot camps and such, and they think they'd get nothing out of a barre class.

Because, "oh, it's just light weights.

And they do a bunch of reps."

Beth jeffers: they do a lot of reps, and people will get sore.

Whitney brown: that's right.beth jeffers: they definitely do.

Whitney brown: it's a really great class, and it's also a nice thing to add into your workout routine.

So if you're doing a lot of heavy lifting, you're doing a lot of cardiovascular work, this is a nice flip-flop on that.

It gives you, like she said, higher reps, lower weights, and it also gives you some relaxation and stretching, which we all desperately need.

Beth jeffers: right.

That's to me, one of the best things about barre.

Whitney brown: absolutely.

Beth jeffers: because it brings in the stretching as you move, and you end again with a great relaxation like we told you about in yoga and now our relaxation.

Whitney brown: that's right.

I love a good relaxation.

Beth jeffers: you need to take some time to do that.

That's super important.

Whitney brown: well, try a barre class out.
