"We can be excited about numbers, but still be cautious..."

Local health officials said they are happy with the downward trend of COVID numbers, but urge everyone to keep up with guidelines.

A "well i think we're doing a great job i mean the numbers look really good right now."

Health officials say hoosiers are working together to slow the spread of covid-19.

Good evening and thanks for joining us.

Indiana state health commissioner doctor kristina box announced yesterda... indiana has one of the lowest spread rates in the country right now.

Health officials say this is great news.

But hoosiers need to keep doing what they're doing.

News 10's sarah lehman is live in our newsroom.

She has more about how we're doing right here in vigo county.

Patrece...rondrell... keeping those hands washed... staying 6 feet apart and of course wearing that face mask all contribute to where indiana is today!

But health officials are urging that we continue these practices.

Things in the hoosier state are slowly starting to open back up.

But they aren't quite back to normal.

"i think everyones trying to wear their mask and social distance and do what they need to do so we can get through all this."

Debbie roman is a terre haute resident.

She says right now she really only goes out when it's absolutley necessary.

Like to the grocery store or work.

But when she is out... "i always wear my mask.

I have seen some people not wearing masks but for the most part i think most businesses have signs that say masks are required and most people are complying i think."

Because many hoosiers -- like roman -- are following these guidelines... the state has one of the lowest spread rates in the country.

A spread rate is how quickly the virus is spreading from person to person.

Roni elder with the vigo county health dpeartment says they're seeing a decline in numbers locally too.

"our numbers are going down and hopefully they continue to go down.

/// it does look like indiana is doing what we need to do and we're on the right path."

Right now -- the vigo right now -- right path."

Right now -- the vigo county health department is waiting for data from labor day weekend.

Elder says numbers could jump up because of that.

Health officials urge everyone to keep following these guidelines to keep the numbers low.

News 10 continues to follow numbers and updates from indiana and illinois.
