'Macon It Safe' pledge supports local businesses in pandemic

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -- Several Macon organizations partnered with Newtown Macon to create an initiative to support the economy during the pandemic.

Ballots can be received by november 6th, as long as they're post marked by election day, which is november 3rd.

"it's washing your hands, socially distancing, and wearing a mask, that's it that's all we've got right now."

Newtown macon announced their new initiative for downtown businesses.

"macon it safe" is a county-wid pledge to unify businesses and residents committed to stopping the spread of covid-19, and supporting the local economy.

Yvonne williams is with the greater macon chamber of commerce.

She says residents and businesses in bibb county need to think about the future.

"for the visitors and the patrons, they need to know that they have patronized a healthy workplace and a healthy place of business.

So we need to really think about our community culture, as being long-term engaged in healthcare and healthy standards as we go forward."

Newtown partnered with the greater macon chamber of commerce, macon-bibb county, macon-bibb ema, urban development authority, and visit macon to create this effort.

After asking about their feelings on the pandemic, newtown found the majority of downtown businesses wanted a way to make their staff and customers feel safer during the pandemic.

Josh rogers, the director of newtown macon, says several businesses have signed up for the campaign.

"already 90 businesses have signed up um on the pledge to show our community's commitment to stopping the spread of covid."

Co-owner of piedmont brewery and kitchen, trish whitley, says she believes the initiative will get more people downtown again.

"signing the pledge and supporting the mask mandate, and all those kinds of things, you know that's what makes us a town that can welcome visitors, they feel safe to come here, they feel safe to eat at our restaurants and shop in our stores."
