Decision to postpone high-risk fall sports to March disappointing, concerning for some

Local administrators and coaches react to football, volleyball and competitive cheer being moved to a "Fall II" March 1, 2021 start date.

Kristen - it has been a summer of uncertainty for high school sports student-athletes.

With an ever- changing situation - it seems that with every decision that is made - more questions are raised.

Last night's decision from the the state hh schl athleticassociatif football - volleyball and competitive cheer to march is another example of just that.

The association said this option came about after discussions with over 500 athletic directors from around the state - with a common theme of concern for the ability to hold these sports in the fall.

In addition - with these sports limited to only practice beginning on september 21 - the athletic association said the decision to delay until march allows for a more concrete and beneficial athletic season for those student-athletes.

How many games teams will be able to play - and what the schedules in these sports will look like are still to be determined.

Association officials said they know not everyone will agree with the decision.

In getting local reaction - it appears as though they were right.

John rathbun: i'm shocked and disappointed and i feel bad for the kids... curtis schmidt: ...they can say that we'll play in march, but i'll believe it when i see it.

Schmidt said he spoke with his players last night - and that they were visibly upset and honestly not convinced they'll even end up being able to play in the spring at this point.

Another factor here is the timing of the decison making - being how close we are to the fall season starting up.
