Local restaurant is open again after using the pandemic as an opportunity to revamp its design and concept..

W-t-v-a's bronson woodruff joins us now live from downtown tupelo to explain those changes... i'm outside kermit's soul kitchen in downtown tupelo.

The restaurant is back open after being closed for months for the coronavirus.

The owner said after having the same restaurant for seven years, it was time for a new theme.

Nat pop: door opening.

That's the sound of business at kermit's soul kitchen.

The restaurant opened its doors again last weekend.

Formerly kermit's outlaw kitchen, owner mitch mccamey said the restaurant's new look was necessary.

"i think everyone involved was pretty tired of the way kermit's outlaw kitchen was just because after awhile, no matter how creative you are, it gets monotonous."

He said kermit's new look is designed to be more family- friendly... he added the restaurant now has new computer systems, a new format, and new staff members.

The restaurant's only been open a couple of days, but mccamey said staffing is not a problem right now... "it's been a difficult time for everybody, so i feel like the staff is there and we'll be just fine."

He said the restaurant's new design is made to help combat the coronavirus.

"we took out a hostess, and we added fifty seats, so now we're a two-story restaurant with outside seating."

He said social distancing can be a challenge for people.

"some of it is still the unknown of how to get people to space correctly and all that, cutting board.

"some of it is still the unknown of how to get people to space correctly and all that, you know?

But it's definitely not an exact science."

In an effort to keep customers healthy - mccamey said all food comes served in a to-go box to keep contact at a minimum.

Hand sanitizer and masks are inside the restaurant.

"basically just try to build a better restaurant."

Mccamey said for now, kermit's is open from five to ten monday through saturday, but will be open seven days a week once new staff get trained up.
