Mayor wonders about social distancing at the even this past weekend

The mayor of saltillo is reacting to the crowds at a weekend graduation.

This after hundreds attended the ceremony held on the football field.

Wayne hereford joins us live from the high school where he talked with the mayor about the lack of social distancing.

There were lots of people wearing their masks at the saltillo graduation saturday.

But our own video showed that there were almost as many who were not.

You did see that there wasn't true social distancing."

Saltillo mayor rex smith says he did not attend the saltillo high school graduation saturday.

But after seeing our video, he offered this explanation.

"their families were comfortable together they felt a comfort being that close..

Hopefully there wasn't a lot of people that would have been in contact with people who had covid."

Governor tate reeves issued an order friday which specifically limits the number of people at indoor and outdoor activities where social distancing is not possible.

That would limit the graduation ceremony to about a hundred people.

And they were supposed to sit six feet apart.

Standup..i spoke with saltillo mayor rex smith about that issue .

He told me that right now the city board is not willing to do anything beyond recommending that residents wear their masks and social distance here in saltillo.

"i just don't feel comfortable mandating as far as the city right now and i don't feel comfortable mandating as a city .

We don 't have the areas that have the big crowds as much."

Lee county school superintendent coke magee did not go on camera.

Instead he sent us a statement containing social distancing requirements for students, parents, guests at lee county school graduation ceremonies.

The statement said free face masks were available.

He says there were signs encouraging social distancing.
