NAACP speaking out on protest and promoting change

Local n- local n-double a-c-p leaders are speaking out about the recent protests around the nation.

These protests have been happening for the last two weeks since george floyd was killed.

On news 10 first at five..

We told you some people are asking for more to come out of these protests.

Now we learn exactly what that is.

News 10's richard solomon joins us now live from our newsroom with more from one local leader.

Terre haute's naacp chapter president sylvester edwards says change starts with te people.

And that's exactly what he's seen with the recent protests.

Now...he says it's time for the community leaders to come together to further that change.

There have been protest... "nats" after protest.... "nats" and they've all caught the attention of the terre haute naacp's president sylvester edwards.

"young people, old people, black people, white people, red people all the rainbow because people are starting to understand that racism is an epidemic" edwards says these protests have both diversity and inclusion.

Two things that will bring change.

But in his community...he says there are more ways voices can be heard.

"you can hope, you can wish and you can pray, but the only thing that's going to make things different people have to go to the polls."

Edwards says it doesn't stop there.

He told me the naacp has been talking with groups in vigo county to promote inclusion and working together.

That incdlues the terre haute police department and vigo county school corporation.

He says the more we all can work together...the better we'll shape the future.

"this is creating new leadership, everything about cleaning up our neighborhood our streets it's good to see young people, people of all walks of life that's out there" there is an naacp meeting happening tonight.

Edwards says they'll be working on ways to reach out to other community leaders here in the near future.
