Police and protesters set positive example following peaceful protest in Utica

The community is commending law enforcement and protesters for ensuring a safe and peaceful protest over the weekend.

Being recognized for keeping everyone safe during yesterday's protests and they're thanking demonstrators for being peaceful.

Kristen, yesterday's protests could have gone in a much different direction and law enforcement, the protesters as well as the community are thankful that it went the way it did.

Utica police sergeant mike curley tells me the department credits the protesters and their relationship with the community for a quiet day and quiet night.

"i think we are here and utica certainly recognize the plate that people are going through.

The anger and the sentiment that they have.

However i don't think we have a dichotomy between utica and the police department.

We don't see ourselves as any different from any of the members of the community so therefore we integrate it ourselves with her messages and we certainly just try to uphold what they want us to do in the safest peaceful manner possible."
