Macon-Bibb commissioners look for room in budget for alternative summer programs

Macon-Bibb commissioners are ironing out budget details before they take a final vote in June.

Principal for soar academy says the district will determine what kind of graduation students will be able to have in july.

Macon-bibb county macon-bibb county commissioners are considering ways... to keep kids engaged this summer... in the face of budget cuts for camps, reduced revenue projections, and employee furloughs.

Today, commissioner vigil watkins recommened virtual reading circles -- hosted online -- as an alternative to no programming at all.

He also laid out the consequences of *not* having those camps... saying the costs could be more than just financial.

"our crime is up we're already about to clip the highest rate and we know these things are connected and to just not try scares me."

Mayor reichert recommended cutting the summer camps ... when he presented his budget... citing covid-19 and an anticipated drop in revenue.
