On The Beat 5/21/20 - Griffin Center for Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Griffin from Griffin Center for Cosmetic Surgery joins us to talk about the aging face.

Troy: welcome to on the beat everyone.

I'm over here with the man himself dr griffin from griffin center for cosmetic surgery.

And today we're talking all about, i know you don't want to hear it, the aging phase.

How are you my friend?

Dr. griffin: i'm fine.

Thank you.

Troy: okay, now it's sort of a conversation we'd like to have, but let's be honest.

What are the reasons why our face ages?

And we're looking at a picture now of quite a difference.

It's the same woman.

But aging.

Explain that.

Dr. griffin: there are several things.

One, gravity.

Living on the face of this earth is the main factor.

You know, it's a necessity or we would all fall off the face earth, you know.

And that photo describes the other things that happened.

You'll notice with the gravity, the jowling that's occurring, you'll notice that the face takes a different overall shape.

The face gets thinner and other areas- troy: we lose further areas.

Yeah.

We lose that fullness, right?

Dr. griffin: oh yeah.

Troy: that youthful fullness that we have to get back.

Dr. griffin: yeah, we lose the subcutaneous tissue.

Troy: okay.

Well, what are some of the reasons of why we age?

Now i know what we're about to say might just be basic common knowledge, right?

Dr. griffin: right.

But you know the things that that people do that increases their aging process is the use of tobacco, sun exposure.

Sun is absolutely horrible for your face or your skin.

It actually causes ... you can see the changes microscopically that occur with sun exposure.

And you know, people just don't take care of their skin.

Troy: okay.

I get it.

I get it.

So we should really be looking after our skin at home as well as a preventative measure.

Dr. griffin: absolutely.

A sun screen men and women base every day before you walk out of the door, you drive your car, you get sun.

Troy: yeah.

I got you.

You brought up something a little bit earlier in the conversation.

We're going to bring up two images for you.

Our face starts to look more like a rectangular shape.

Dr. griffin: yes.

Troy: why is that?

Dr. griffin: well with the move of the gravity we start with a v shape face.

Troy: got you.

Dr. griffin: as gravity brings the fat pads down, the muscles down, it takes a rectangular shape.

So it definitely changes.

Troy: i got you.

And they say that we start to age in our 30s if we're not maintaining it and looking after our skin.

Dr. griffin: very true.

Troy: where do you sit on the spectrum scale of that.?

Dr. griffin: i totally agree with that, because a lot of the sun damage that you pay for later happens in your teens.

Troy: exactly.

Dr. griffin: and through the- troy: 20s.

Trying to look our best.

Dr. griffin: 20s.

Oh yeah.

Oh yeah.

Troy: okay.

Now i know you are a facial plastic surgeon.

Where do you sit when it comes to having preventable measures as in fat transfer and injectables on the face as well before you go under the knife?

Dr. griffin: well, they're starting at younger ages and even some things that you can do that is not the fix but decreases the effect is fillers that restores some of the tissue loss.

You can also ... we do fat tissue transfer.

We take fat from the abdomen through tiny little incisions, and that's one of the things we're going to cover later, and we put that in a centrifuge and get all the impurities out and then inject that into the face.

Troy: and that's becoming quite common now.

Even when you do a normal facelift, a lot of surgeons are now doing that instead of an injectable.

Dr. griffin: i would say 99% of the time we're doing fat tissue transfer with face lifts.

Troy: dr. griffin, thank you so much.

Dr. griffin: you bet.

Troy: we're going to get into so much more information down the road.

Dr. griffin: great.

Troy: appreciate you.
