Rocket City Curling has online challenge

Ll: the curling craze after the 2018 winter olympics, fueled the start of the rocket city curling club in huntsville.

They are use to hitting the ice at the ice plex, but during the coronavirus pandemic, they've had to get a little creative.

"it's a weird sport, but it's a lot of fun."

The club started curling online.

After a successful first tournament, more club members have joined in for round number two.

"being able to come together during these virtual games and being able to talk to each other and having that shared community, really drives that connection."

David tutwiler won the first challenge.

Since starting the second touranment, he says people from around the world are tuning in.

"we've had people from florida, we've had other people who we knew joing from knowing us from other tournaments, we just get random people from sweden, japan, canada, who watch the game and we just get to know them a little bit."

The sport is bringing people together not just to play, but to connect during a time when human interaction is limited.

"we use zoom and people from all around the world get on together who are curlers and we get put in random rooms just to hang out with people."

And tutwiler says he hopes to be around people in real life soon, especially by september, when rocket city curling hosts its biggest event of the year.

"we have teams from across the country come to huntsville to play in that tournament, so really excited to host that again and looking forward to seeing everybody."
