Everything you need to know should coronavirus come to Purdue

No students have even been tested for the coronavirus, according to Purdue President Mitch Daniels.

However, one visiting faculty member is in quarantine right now.

Purdue's upcoming spring break are off.

The university announced today the coronavirus concern is just too great heading into break.

No cases have been reported at purdue.

However, as news 18's trevor peters reports...the university is still preparing for what they hope will never occur.

Nat west lafayette is the most densely populated city in indiana.

Purdue has one of the largest international student populations of any u.s. university.

Those stats don't bode well for preventing viruses.

"i have heard a lot of people saying 'what if we need to stock up on food?

Or stay inside?'

The singing group was supposed to have an upcoming performance tour to italy.

That is, until the coronavirus spread.

"it's mostly at this point, i think just disappointment.

I don't think a whole lot of people are thinking about the danger of the virus at this point."

"we are taking this very seriously.

Purdue president mitch daniels says no students are infected, or have even been tested for the coronavirus.

However, one visiting faculty member is in self-quarantine.

"where health and safety are concerned, we just try to leave nothing to chance.

Now, we all need to keep our heads about this.

The regular flu right now is affecting and hurting a lot more people than this thing."

The plan is to address the coronavirus in three steps.

First, precaution.

With spring break just days away, all university- sponsored travel abroad is now off.

Second, containment.

Should it come, purdue will quarantine students.

"we have some facilities down at purdue west."

In addition, personal trips to countries with level three travel advisories will require quarantine for 14 days and a doctor's approval to return to campus.

Lastly, continuity.

Purdue could get to the point where it needs to offer online courses.

That's the plan for this summer at least.

The university is working with international students who may not want to go home.

"we are going to try to be helpful in housing and other accommodations.

We have over 700 courses already available this summer, and there is a chance we could scramble and add a few more."

So while they're here for spring break, the girls' friends have plans to cheer them up with a party.

"it's all going to be italian-themed.they're going to cook us dinner and serve us."

Purdue says it will reimburse students who had travel scheduled.
