A lot of the time, horror games try to focus too much on visuals and gore, which tends to cheapen the overall story. In my experience, the best horror games are the ones that barely show any blood, which focus a lot on the psychology of killers, or those that have characters with deep motivation. That’s where Without a Dawn shines, because it’s a game that talks about self-harm, depression, but also people haunting your nightmares and you not knowing what to do. Jesse Makkonen made quite an interesting game in Without a Dawn, because we don’t have the usual horror tropes. It’s a game that, despite being short, does leave quite an impact on your life, and it certainly makes you question some of your choices. The main character in this game is a young woman troubled by her nightmares, and she also has an anxiety disorder.
