LOWRY’S BOATS reviews

Roger Lowry a Penzance resident, boat owner and a painter. He puts both passions in this

book, his love of boats and his love of painting them. Roger ha s amassed numbers of boats

in his paintings that have come and gone. Roger has inadvertently captured and recorded a

body of work that is a national and local treasure, cataloguing the heritage of Penzance,

Penwith, Cornwall; through his painting and art style which are vibrant in colours and with

bold strokes. This is a gem for boat and history lovers.

Just got my copy of Lowry's Boats and can only recommend it. It's full of Roger's brightly

coloured paintings that breathe life into these wonderful boats of all types and sizes. From

Roger and Anne's own Fair Isle yoal, Sholgirse, to much bigger stuff such as the Waverley

and Tenacious, this is both a fun-packed frolic as much as a serious study of many fine craft

to bless the West Penwith shores. Glad to see my old Perseverance making two appearances..

Mike Smylie is a maritime historian concentrating on the fishing industry and working

vessels. He has writes widely on the subject for publications including Classic Boat, The

Boatman, Watercraft, Maritime Heritage , The Marine Quarterly , Maritime Life and

Traditions, Fishing News and the European Maritime Heritage newsletter.

He is the author of over 20 published books.

He is a member of the Society for Nautical Research , the South West Maritime History Society , the

Coble and Keelboat Society and the Anglesey Antiquarians. He is a co-founder of the 40+ Fishing

Boat Association which was founded in 1995 against the background of the scrappi ng of

decommissioned fishing vessels, and edits their thrice yearly magazine Fishing Boats.

Just received my copy of Lowry's Boats. Great work. Many Congratulations.

Roger Lowry's Facebook page is full of West Cornwall news, landscape, campaigns, pets,

outrage & best of all: his paintings which are a joyful tonic in these troubled times for our

planet & our country. At last, Roger has published many of his Mount's Bay maritime

paintings in Lowry's Boats, Paintings of Traditional Vessels, Associated with Mount's Bay,

Cornwall. It is full of Roger's lively naive paintings: Mount's Bay & its boats, set against

the background of the Mount, the Dock & St Mary's Church, Newlyn North Pier and the

Prom. Many of these c raft are familiar to locals, two Scillonians ancient and modern, the

Trinity House ships Stella & Satellite, Jim Richards' famous old Pioneer, beautifully

observed, and Les Rowe's Ocean Pride. St Piran rows his currach into Mount's Bay, HMS

Pickle brings news of Trafalgar and Mr Ellis sails the Truelove , built of floor boards and

boxes at the back of Camberwell Street in 1906. Several of the vessels are escorted by

dolphins, dragons & monster mackerel. The book is a warm, evocative, colourful & lively

reminder of Mount's Bay's story and boats

John McWilliams He is a volunteer at St Ives Archive & Penlee House Museum's

photograph research group. In 2007 published Breton Fishermen in Cornwall & Brittany A

CENTURY OF FRIENDSHIP, the result of several years' re search into the story of his

childhood friends. He has written many articles. In 2010 he was made a Bard of the Cornish

Gorseth for his work in Cornish Maritime History. He chose the Bardic name Jowan, Cornish

for John.

Fantastic Roger... Book looks great!
