As lockdown eases, road trips beckon - and with summer on its way, you can even peel the roof down

Leasing can be an affordable, practical route into having your own private car, but it's not always easy to tell the good deals from the duds.

The experts at our sister magazine What Car? work hard to find you the best pay-monthly schemes, taking into account mileage allowance, montly outlay, contract length and initial deposit. We'll be bringing you the best deals they find from a different segment each week.

Looking to buy, not lease your next car? Autocar's new used car deals section can help you find a great price on a nearly-new model

This week, convertibles:

-1. Audi TT Roadster 40 TFSI Sport S Tronic-

*£1548 deposit, £516 per month, 36 months, 10,000 miles per year*

Still the catwalk queen of convertibles but no diva, thanks to its undemanding nature and top-drawer build quality. There’s an engine and a drivetrain for everyone and, depending on engine, a choice of front- or four-wheel drive.

-2. Mercedes-Benz E300 Cabriolet AMG Line Premium-

*£1968 deposit, £656 per month, 48 months, 10,000 miles per year*

Mature, secure and self-possessed, the E-Class is the one grown-up in the convertible community. It’s richly specced, comfortable and quite, even with the roof down. There’s a huge range of engines to choose from, too.

-3. Mini Convertible 1.5 Cooper Classic-

-*£802 deposit, £267 per month, 48 months, 8000 miles per year*-

Small but perfectly formed, this Mini is a bit of a steal when it comes to convertibles. It’s better engineered than it needs to be, while its roof really does fold down flat, revealing even more of the little car’s vivacious character.

-4. BMW 420i Convertible M Sport-

*£1530 deposit, £510 per month, 48 months, 10,000 miles per year*

Not the tautest or stiffest convertible but certainly stylish and, thanks to a metal roof rather than a fabric one, practical, with genuine all-weather appeal. Few rivals compare when it has its roof down and wind blocker up.
