High Speed 2: Planned UK high speed railway
High Speed 2 (HS2) is a partly planned high speed railway in the United Kingdom with its first phase in the early stages of construction, the second phase yet to receive full approval and the third subject to merging with Northern Powerhouse Rail, a separate project. Upon completion, the railway will link London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds in a "Y"-shaped network with new 360 km/h (225 mph) tracks, with spurs serving Crewe and Sheffield and selected services continuing to destinations in northern England and Scotland on the "classic network" via the West Coast Main Line and East Coast Main Line. Scheduled to open in phases between 2028 and 2040, HS2 will be the second high speed rail line in Britain capable of speeds above 186 mph (300 km/h), the first being High Speed 1 (HS1), which connects London to the Channel Tunnel, commissioned in the mid-2000s.
