The Minnesota Timberwolves are an American professional basketball team based in Minneapolis. The Timberwolves compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The team was founded in 1989. In 2021, former MLB player Alex Rodriguez and entrepreneur Marc Lore entered into an agreement to purchase a controlling stake in the team from Glen Taylor. The deal was structured as a phased purchase over three years, culminating in a final installment in 2024. After a legal dispute and arbitration ruling in favor of Rodriguez and Lore, Taylor agreed to complete the sale in April 2025 for the originally agreed $1.5 billion. The transfer of ownership is now pending final approval by the NBA Board of Governors. Rodriguez and Lore also purchased the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx. The Timberwolves play their home games at Target Center, their home since 1990.
