Eyesores in Okolona are demolished

Contractors tore down at least 7 abandoned homes in Okolona.

Crews are working to tear down houses some feel are eyesores in chickasaw neighborhoods.

Wtva's brianna bynum spoke with folks living there who said they're happy to see the abandoned properties go.

Its only an empty lot now but an abandoned home used to sit here.

People who live in okolona and those involved with this project say it's a step in the right direction for the city.

Contractors tore down this home and several others because the mayor considered the properties unsafe and a health risk.

Okolona resident chris carouthers said he hated looking at the vacant homes around town and considers the demolition project progress.

"it makes the neighborhoods look bad.

I guess when theyre tearing them dowm now, i guess it's improvement."

The city hired demolition worker taylor dobbs to remove the homes.

"these people over here are happy.

They stop by, blow, hand a bottle of water.

Say theyre glad that were able to help the mayor out.
