MCPD: Culprit Behind Loud Booms Arrested

The exact source of the loud kabooms has yet to be revealed.

It's a story kimt broke first... mason city police say a man is sitting in jail accused of being responsible for a series of deafening booms heard around town.

Residents around the river city have been wondering who or what has been causing the mysterious explosion sounds.

"* i found out about the arret this afternoon while working with mason city police on another story.

Right behind me you can see the home of the suspect who was arrested.

Police served a search warrant at the home here on south massachusetts avenue earlier this morning.

The suspect is 47 year old doran macklenburg, he was booked into the cerro gordo county jail.

Macklenburg is being charged with three counts of unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon, which is a class d felony.

Mason city police captain mike mckelvey is confident the river city will sleep a little easier i think we've built a good case on this and hopefully all the residents of mason city and the visitors will get a little peace and quiet in the evenings when these booms used to occur in the past.

I did look up what would be considered an 'offensive weapon' under iowa law and it's pretty broad.

It could be anything from a machine gun, to a bomb, or even a knife.

Police have not released what could have been used to make those loud explosions.
