People who live on the ridge are among those without power this morning.

Action news now reporter jafet serrato is live in paradise... he spoke with a longtime couple that just moved back after the camp fire... to see how they prepared.

Linda this is chuck and janie dees... they have never experienced a power safety shutoff before.

I spoke with them on monday... here's what they plan to do during this dark time.

(nats: footsteps on dirt) down this dirt road... you'll come across an r-v - parked on a plot of land where a home once stood... until the camp fire.

"we spent our first night on our property last night since november 7 of 2018."

That's chuck dee - he and his wife are rebuilding their retirement home.

"we met at a party of course.... teenage party yeah."

They have been inseparable for nearly 60 years.

Chuck and janie can't imagine living anywhere else but paradise.

"we go rving and when we're headed home.

When we're headed up the hill one of my favorite sayings was 'are you smiling now?'

And i would be" smiling through everything... even potential power shutoffs.

"well myself im not looking forward to it" (nats: water faucet) water still running... the dees are doing their best to conserve energy.

"it's going to be warm again and a lack of air conditioning isn't what you might call welcoming" so unwelcoming that their neighbors graciously allowed them to use their power and water until they get their own.

"steve our neighbor here just went out yesterday and bought a generator."

But if pg&e performs a power safety shutoof - chuck tells me it won't be enough.

But they have a plan.

"we have a generator waiting for us but its two and a half hours away."

And whatever challenges they face - chuck and janie tell me they will get through those too.

"so we'll see what steps are next."
