Women Encouraged To Get Mammograms

New tonight at 10 --- mammograms --- necessary for early detection of breast cancer --- but the life- saving exam -- put on hold -- as the coronavirus took hold.

Now -- one local hospital network is turning this friday -- into "a girls night out" -- you won't want to --*and shouldn't miss.

44news reporter megan diventi -- has this unique story.

"it's a procedure that could save lives thats why health officials here in our area are making sure women are taken care of during this pandemic."

"the number one way to cure it is to find it early."

It can be cured if detected early-- breast cancer impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of women across the country each year--- but covid-19 has forced many to postpone their next trip to the doctors office-- -director ascension st vincent evansville breast center "during march we all saw a big slow down in health care and in the middle of march until the middle of may we had to close our doors because of the covid 19 pandemic and unfortuinately during that time over 2600 women did not receive a mammorgram that was scheduled here at saint vincent."

In our community-- hauck says the average age for women diagnosed with breast cancer is 62... but women of all ages can be impacted.... "it was super easy-- veery m uch social distance--they have markers where you can stand."

Pam kinney just had a mammogram last week---a procedure she says is important-- "most people probably arent good about doing monthly exams-i'm not and i dont know if i would know what to find if i did."

So women don't fall behind-- ascension saint vincent is encouraging women to take charge--- to help women catch up the breast center will be hosting a mammograms until midnight event this friday from 5 until midnight--- "people aren't too busy right now.

You dont have time to go out to the movies or dinner but hopefully uyou have time to take care of your health."
