Shasta County couple share story of strength and resilience two years after the Carr Fire

Renee and Steven Glassburn spend most of their days here in the garden of their new home, a stark difference from when they first moved in, just three months after the Carr Fire.

Deaths in our country -- with more than 1 point 3 million people recovered.# new at 5 -- we're following the stories of hope and hardship as the community in shasta county recovers from the devastating carr fire.

Action news now reporer karen alvarez is with us live in studio -- with how one family is coping two years later.

I first met the glassburns back in december of 2019 during a story i was working on.

Talking to them i learned they were carr fire survivors---who had lost everything.

They were the first people who shared their story with me of that tragic event and two years later----i'm honored to share their story----- renee and steven glassburn spend most of their days here in the garden of their new home---(broll of both in the garden w/ nat sound<look at them beauty, it's got them yellow flowers, i didn't even know we planted those there in fact, i don't know what they even are.

A stark difference from when they first moved in - just three months after the carr fire--- and it is in this gazebo((show photo)) take sot- ú---<<this was my favorite scripture before the carr fire and it's in jeremiah 9:11) (broll of r and s with nat <<i love you, i love you to >) where steven and renee sat down to share their story of strength and resilience with me-- did you ever think this was going to happen to you?

Never, never.

No.

It was going towards west redding.

Friends who lived in downtown redding were evacuating, people across the river were evacuating, it was just a scary, horrible thing going on, and people didn't know where to go.

Never expecting the fire would reach their home---they got a call from their pastor's wife --- she said "you've got to get out.

The fire is coming over the hill.

Cal fire is coming up the hill near zogg mine road, which is where we lived, coming up the road to evacuate everyone.

And so we rushed around and put things in our hunting trailer, grabbed some clothing, our cat, and a few possessions and off we went.

Take cellphone video: <i'm at i believe 8499 zogg mine trail, i just picked a random area to go up and this area was destroyed > they found out their home was gone from this video a nephew texted to them.

I realized my house was gone and i said l-d we didn't know and i have to go find your uncle and tell him.

In a matter of minutes---25 years of memories --- destroyed.

It was solitude, it was my paradise, and it's gone.

This is all that's left of their own little slice of paradise.

((broll of car/ the three of us walking)) this is renee's*secon* returning since the carr fire, and steven's thir* time.

??*cue musi*????

&oh wow &this is home this was home, it's not home anymore &.

But it can be rebuilt for someone else, it's hard to let go in your mind of what it was and what you had, and the piece and content that you had ((show and tell)) up on that hill, that little hill up there that's where i kept my fire wo, my fire wood's up there &you're never going to get rid of the scar, it's too deep, it's not going to happen, but we're never going to give up on god&he's going to take care of my wife and grandson and he's going to make sure everything's alright& and everything is alright for renee and steven - ready to make new memories in their new homeã even as they hold on to pieces of their old home.

"you did a good job, you can go in and go to sleep."
