The State Department of Agriculture plans to distribute a total of $300,000 in state funding to 11 Indiana food banks to provide assistance and services to Hoosiers in need.

Each add one new case.

Food banks across indiana are receiving federal funding to combat an increase in food insecurity.fox 55's jeremy masukevich spoke with northeast indiana food banks about how long they expect the need to continue.

Nat carmen as a foodbank we can make sure that we are doing everything we can to get people fed.community harvest is one of eleven indiana food banks to share three hundred thousand dollars from the indiana department of agriculture.president carmen cumberland says the funding couldn't have come at a better time.sot carmen in a quarter we will distribute roughly 3.9 million pounds of food.

During this last quarter which were our covid months so far 5.7 million pounds of food.since the start of the pandemic feeding indiana's hungry estimates a 40 percent increase in the number of hoosiers that are food insecure sot carmen before covid our numbers were 1 in 8 were food insecure.

And reports just came out and now its 1 in 5.another recipient of federal fundingsecond harvest food bank of east central indiana has increased its distributions from nine a month...to nine a week.sot tim in june of last year we were doing this same activity.

We were serving about 3,900 families with this one program and this year its 24,000.

President and ceo tim kean says the funds will help them feed more people for months to come.sot tim the medical crisis i think is evolving into an economic crisis.

So we anticipate seeing these numbers of people in need throughout the rest of 2020, and quite possibly a significant portion of 2021.

Cumberland says the thirty thousand dollars received by community harvest will be used to buy food from fort wayne distributors.nat carmen we like to keep it local so we spend the money local to keep it generated in the community.

She hopes the additional funding will make sure less food is going to waste... and that more hoosiers become food secure as a result.nat thats our neighbors 1 in 5 don't know where their next meal is coming from...414,000 kids not knowing where their next meal is coming.in fort wayne, jeremy masukevich, fox 55 news
