Voters approve transient lodging tax increase

Medford voters are approving one portion of funding for the construction of a new sports and events complex.

Thanks for staying with us, i'm brian morton.

The first step in funding for the howard memorial sports park was secured last night with the passing of the 2-percent transient lodging tax increase.

The tax increase was approved by just over 1-thousand votes.

52-percent voting yes.

48-percent voting no.

Today stormwatch 12's alicia rubin spoke with a local family about their excitement for the new indoor complex.

Alicia says: "this is the area where that medford sports in events complex will be built, it's right across the street from logos charter school and one of the main attractions of this event sportscenter is going to be a huge swimming pool that's going to offer opportunities for our local competitive swimmers" the proposal for the howard memorial sports park includes indoor recreational and competitve pools and a multi-purpose events center.

The large indoor space will be a drastic change for indoor sports here in the rogue valley.

Right now, local swim teams share the ymca's pool and superior athletic's pool.

Hannah says: "we only have about four lanes and there's minimum 15 people in each lane so it gets really really hard you just can't you can't even do a full work out without having all of us squished together" right now, medford doesn't have the capacity to hold large indoor sports events or tournaments in one location -- many local teams travel hours away to compete.

The parks and recreation department says they believe this indoor complex will bring tourism to the rogue valley -- similar to the increase that came following the completion of u.s. cellular fields.

Reporting in medford, alicia rubin, newswatch 12.

The passing of this tax increase is really just the beginning of a very long process.

Coming up tonight on newswatch 12 at 6, hear from medford parks and recreation as they explain the next
