In colbert county.

This morning we're learning more about the financial impact the coronavirus is having on the u-s space and rocket center here in huntsville.

Waay 31's rodneya ross is live at the space and rocket center now.

Rodneya -- what impact will this have on space camps this summer?

Since the museum and space camps are closed because of the safer at home order, the space and rocket center no longer needs the 750 part time workers it usually hires for the summer.

Spokeswoman pat ammons told us 103 full-time employees were laid off and millions of dollars in tuition was refunded after space camps were cancelled.

And with the museum closed -- the center is losing out on admission fees.

Ammons said since a third of the staff has been let go, operations will look different when the center reopens.

There will be people wearing a lot of different hats and sometimes many hats as we try to get back on our feet and get going here with the important work we do here.

Right now, leaders at the center are working on a plan to safely re-open when the state allows.

In about an hour -- we'll hear from the executive vice president of marketing for the huntsville madison county visitors bureau about the impact cuts at the space and rocket center may have on tourism in the area.
