Rising Massachusetts river triggers area flooding, bigger concerns about future

Flood warnings remained in place Thursday for the Blackstone River at Northbridge in Worcester County, as anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ida sent the river above flood stage.

Minor flooding was expected during the day Thursday before water levels begin to recede later in the evening.

Residents in Northbridge were watching the briskly moving river, which video from the area showed was over its banks.

Police said if the river level rose any more than where it was on Thursday afternoon, it could engulf a bridge and force the closure of roads.
