He was sailing on the SSV Corwith Cramer, a brigantine tall ship on a semester program with Sea Education Association studying Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.
They were also being trained as a tall ship crew so they sailed the boat themselves as students.
They sailed from St.
Petersburg, Florida to Woods Hole, MA conducting marine biodiversity and oceanography research for 6 weeks.
They saw a basking shark around a hundred nautical miles offshore of New England on May 15th and estimated it to be around 25 feet long on May 15.
