The Butte County Local Food Network is hosting its first annual Spring Garden BLITZ this weekend, providing home grown food to locals across the county.

Some organizers and volunteers say this has helped carry them through such a difficult year.

The way it should be.

The butte county local food network is hosting its first annual spring garden blitz this weekend& provding home grown food to locals across the county.

Action news now reporter carmela karcher spoke with some organizers and volunteers who say this has helped carry them through such a difficult year.

Carmela karcher: "the spring garden blitz is back and the garden boxes are ready for all different kinds of home grown veggies."

From fennel to broccoli to kale&these all can be grown in the comfort of your own backyard.

Thanks to the butte county local food network& hundreds of garden boxes are packed up and given to locals across the county.

Inspired by the home garden campaign during world war ii& volunteers in the area joined together this weekend to help bring food and garden boxes right to your door.

Board secretary toni zanella says she hopes to see a garden box in every home.

Toni zanella/bclfn board secretary: "it's something that is really important for us to grow our own food, know where it's coming from, know what we are eating and be part of that whole process because we become so separated and so detached from our food so i think it's really important."

All that is neededÃa garden box& some soil&and a bunch of healthy greens.

But that's not all.

While you can choose between buying a 4x4 or 4x8 garden box& boxes are also given out for free to those who need them the most.

And volunteers like leslie and bill say this is what keeps them coming back to lend their green thumb.

Leslie wilson- corsbie/ volunteer: "you can do little things, like herbs.

It's just a matter of community and it feels really good to help out.

It's what we should do as a community.

It's a really wonderful thing."

Bill happ/volunteer: "you can't buy tomatoes like you can grow them.

You can't buy peaches like you can pick them right off the tree."

Carmela karcher: "make sure to keep an eye out for the next garden blitz happening in the late summer to early fall.

In chico carmela karcher action news now coverage you can count on!"

Garden box orders for the spring 2021 garden blitz have closed but the network is still looking for volunteers.
