New York State updates spectator policy for high school sports contests

The New York State Department of Health has updated its regulations for spectators at high school athletics events, potentially allowing for an increase in attendance.

Announced an update to its spectator limits for high school sports contests.

The state department of health released new guidance today that said it's social gathering limit for sporting events is 100 people for indoor events - 200 for outdoor events.

This applies to all present on the premises including players - coaches - and officials.

Schools will have the option of allowing spectators in under those social gathering limits or setting a two spectator per player policy.

In the fall - schools in our area largely implemented the two spectator per player policy.

For winter sports - spectators generally were not allowed except for parents of upperclassmen on senior nights.

It is important to note that regardless of the updated social gathering limits - capacity is still limited to no more than 50 percent of a facility's maximum occupancy for indoor sporting events.

Social distancing policies and protocols will still be enforced.
