Steve Beavis in Grants pass has had to deal with the addition of being disabled and without a job during the pandemic.

Person who's ready to make a living again but says he can't get the assistance he desperately needs.

Tyler says: people have struggled in many ways since the pandemic put some people out of work.

But one grants man is dealing with an additional problem when it comes to unemployment.

Sot: i'd love to get a job or hopefully start my own business here.

Vo: former roofer steve beavis had his leg amputated after doctors informed him of a blood clot.

For a while he was receiving financial support through social security disability insurance but hasn't received any relief checks since covid-19 hit.

Sot: i'm kind of limited to my job opportunities in the situation i'm in now.

Vo: he says he didn't think he would be denied since his disability is visible but he worries the employment offices focus on numbers like age and work history rather than medical circumstances.

Sot: the social security disability it doesn't seem like it's going to happen yet so i got to have something.

Vo: beavis says he has spoken to some lawyers and they advise him to appeal the denial.

In the meantime -- he says he will be working on work skills but says the unfortunate reality is when employers have to choose between two applicants they'll likely choose someone who doesn't need accommodations.

Tyler says: beavis says he isn't the latest data for our region indicates that unemployment rates are on par with the state and with the country.

Jackson county is seeing unemployment rates at 6 point two percent as compared to april of 2020 when unemployment spiked to nearly 16 percent.

As of right now -- klamath county sits at 6 point 8 percent for unemployement instead of 15 point 6 percent as it was last april.
