Food pantries overstocked in Douglas County
Food pantries in douglas county are dealing with a unique problem.
Too much food.
And not enough people to give it to.
But, even so... kezi 9 news reporter evita garza shows us why food insecurity is still an issue.
< as the program director for the feeding umpqua food bank, sarah mcgregor is responsible for distributing food to 16 pantries in douglas county.
But she says the demand has fallen flat.
She suspects it's because the federal government has been providing more benefits throughout the pandemic - like extra snap money and unemployment.

It left places like the fish food pantry with too much food.

00:35 evita: even though fewer people are getting in their car and rushing to get a free food box at places like fish food pantry, mcgregor says that doesn mean food insecurity isn still a huge issue here in douglas county?
Right now, about 15 percent of people in douglas county... don't have enough money to feed their families.?there still between 15 and 18 that are accessing emergency food every month.
Even though it hasn gotten a lot worse during covid, it hasn gotten better?
And, while people seem to be surviving now -- both mcgregor and jasper say they don expect this lull to last long.?we know there are additional benefits out there right now.
But we think it important that people do come to the pantry because these benefits are going to stop?
