Tonight on prime news at 7.... washington is stepping up security, ahead of joe biden's inauguration next week.

And, in tonight's health watch, we hear from world health leaders, starting their long-awaited investigation, into the origins of the coronavirus.

"prime news at 7.

Your news starts now."

Good evening, i'm andrew harrison.

And i'm emily cassulo.

Welcome to prime news at 7.

President trump is on the verge of an historic second senate impeachment trial on charges of inciting a riot at the u.s. capitol last week.

Due to ongoing threats from the president's supporters washington is now on high alert, and very heavily guarded.

Vice president mike pence attended an inauguration security briefing, before visiting some of the thousands of national guard members stationed at the u-s capitol.

C-b-s news has learned of a new law enforcement bulletin warning that the success of last week's breach could fuel more violence among domestic extremist groups.

President trump released a video wednesday calling for calm, after the house took the historic step of impeaching him for a second time on charges of inciting the u.s. capitol assault.

The impeachment case now goes to the senate for a trial - which is not expected to begin until after the president- elect and vice president-elect are sworn in.

"post presidential impeachments are bad for the presidency...i believe that this president has committed an impeachable offense."

In statement, president-elect joe biden urged senate leadership to quote, "find a way to deal with their constitutional responsibilities on impeachment, while also working on the other urgent business of this nation.

" one lawmaker already has plans to attempt to remove joe biden from office.

Georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene has announced plans to impeach the president-elect.

She tweeted last night quote, "on january 21st 20-21, i'll be filing articles of impeachment against joe biden for abuse of power."

Green voted against the impeachment of president trump.

Biden takes office as president january 20th at noon.

January is human trafficking awareness month and a local organization want to remind people that human trafficking is everywhere including chattanooga.

Loves arm outreach is a local non profit that helps human trafficking victims safely find a way out.

Investigators believe chattanooga is a hub for trafficking because it's so close to a major interstate system.

Loves arm executive director says trafficking has been on the rise due to the covid-19 pandemic.

"we cant put a stamp on what a trafficking victim look like or what a person looks like that may be trapped in trafficking prostitution or addictive behaviors.

We are humans and we all look alike.

But there are pockets of high activity in this city."

As of today, hamilton county has 228 new cases of covid 19, and one more person has died.

The brings the county' death toll to 323.

In a bit of good news, the total number of active cases has gone down slightly to a little more than 4,100.

That's still far too many for hamilton county schools resume traditional learning.

Students will continue to learn remotely through at least next week.

The number of covid patients in the hospital and i-c-u has also dropped a little bit.

Pharmacies in tennessee are taking on a big role with covid- 19 vaccinations.

Through a partnership with the state, they have been vaccinating residents and staff at long term care facilities.

According to the national association of chain drug stores, there is a pharmacy within 5 miles of 90 percent of americans.

That will help with distribution once vaccines are more widely available.

"pharmacies have the capacity to meet the demand for 100 million vaccine doses in just one month when that level of the vaccine supply is available."

Hamilton county expects to receive vaccines next week for people who have already received their first shot.

As covid-19 deaths and cases continue to rise in whitfield county, commissioners have repealed a mask mandate in county owned buildings.

It had only been in effect for less than a month.

This happened in their first commission meeting without, now former, commissioner lynn "lotter" laughter.

She repeatedly tried to institute a mask mandate while she was chairman.

"i don't know how any other commissioners can look at any of rogers' family in the face, since he died with covid.

I don't understand mark gibson, whose father died of covid just a few weeks ago, so i don't know how those commissioners can look any of rogers's family or any of mark's family in the face and not keep at least a recommendation to wear a mask."

Laughter says this is a big step back for whitfield county and its safety.

Experts from the world health organization have arrived in wuhan for a long-awaited investigation into the origins of covid-19.

It comes more than a year after the virus emerged in the chinese city.

Tina kraus has the details, in tonight's health watch.

Nats.... a team of scientists moved through a quarantine tunnel at wuhan's airport... headed to a hotel in the chinese city where covid-19 was first detected more than a year ago.

Nats up...mandarin this man says, 'it took them long enough - but better late than never.'

Nats up...mandarin another says, ' it doesn't matter when they come as long as they find the truth.'

Investigators from the world health organization want to know how the virus, which experts believe came from a live market, jumped from animals to people.

But getting answers won't be easy....with china waging a campaign to cast doubt on the origins.

The us accuses officials of hiding the extent of the intial outbreak.

This is about science, let's leave the politics out of it.

This is not about finding someone to blame.

This is about understanding what happened.

One possible focus is the lab at wuhan institute of virology.

But the who is not planning to look into whether there might have been an accidental release of the coronavirus as some us politicians, including president trump, have claimed.

Nats up...mandarin... a government spokesman said researchers will "exchange views" with chinese scientists but gave no indication if they'll be allowed to gather evidence.

It could be a very long journey before we get a full understanding of what happened.

The concern is.....the probe will be more symbolic than substantial.

Data from the tennessee department of health's drug overdose reporting system suggests the distribution of the second coronavirus relief package may result in a spike in opioid overdoses.

According to the hamilton county coalition, opioid overdoses spiked over 30 percent statewide during the months of the covid-19 shutdowns and first round of stimulus checks.

If you have any unwanted prescription medicine, you are urged to properly dispose of it by using the counties drop off boxes or drug deactivation pouches.

Here are the signs of an overdose: "what can happen when an individual starts to overdose is : pinpoint pupils, labored breathing, very shallow breathing, skin turns blue, nails turn blue, they may be unconscious or they may even throw up."

The county does offer prevention resources, including narcan training.

The girl scouts are launching a brand new cookie that makes breakfast and dessert best friends.

Whether you're in a big city or a small village, the job of responding to emergencies is much the same.

We're lucky to be able to call on these law enforcement officers, firefighters and e-m-s personnel.

In little varnell, georgia, a lot of that work falls to the police department, and tonight we salute the new chief, as our first responder of the month.

Here's news 12's bill mitchell.

Varnell, georgia first responders usually work in the shadows of chattanooga and dalton.

In other words, their work is not always recognized outside the city limits.

But the 2000 or so residents still need a quick response in emergencies.

Kyle moreno is a veteran officer who took over the chief's job in 2019.

But, he does double duty.

Chief kyle moreno, varnell police department.

"..you're still a police officer, you still investigate crimes, still do welfare checks .

You assist other officers on call, just like all other officers and agencies."

In a small department, every person on the staff has to carry their own weight...and moreno is glad to have the trained group he works with.

Chief moreno "our officers want to be here.

This is where they want to be, they want to see varnel grow, they want the community grow, they want to see the department grow."

Sometimes it's a serious crime..or just showing young people the inside of a patrol car.

It's relating to the citizens that moreno thinks is important.

And he's has set goals for the future of his agency.

Chief moreno "when i was appointed in june i kind of hit the road running, so what i did is, i took the foundation that they police department had built and started implementing things such as trying to update equipment through grant funding and other resourcers, increase officer training, increase officer presence in the community."

And the plan is now taking hold.

So, chief kyle moreno, we here at news 12 are happy to name you our first responder of the month.

Chief moreno "despite the controversy or criticism surrounding this profession, i think it's a very honorable profession, it means a lot to me to service the community, the state of georgia and to make a difference in somebody's life."

Covid-19 and the transition of power going into 2021.

But 30 years ago, the concerns were much different.

Our service members were headed to iraq for a war with saddam hussein.

It was a strange war because there was the buildup before the fighting started.

And in january of 1991, parents still hoped and prayed that war could be avoided.

S/ persian gulf war buildup/ jan.

14, 1991 coming up next on prime news at seven... we'll introduce you to our first responder of the month, and tell you how he's going above and beyond the call of duty.

But first...here's danielle with another look at your forecast.

Chip chapman tonight i'll la out my first step american rescue plan ... tackle the pandemic to get direct financial assistance for relief to americans who need th most ... my first appearancbefore a joint session of congress a joint session of congress, i will lay out my build back better with every plan ... make historic investments in infrastructure that go back better plan go back better plan, infrastructure, manufacturing, innovation , infrastructure, manufacturing, innovation, research and development clean energy investments in a caregiving economy and skills and training needed bar workers to be able to compete and when the global economy of the coming year ... moody's independent wall street firm said my approach will create more than 18 million job ... our rescue and recovery plan is a fat for with both seriousness of purpose and a clear plan wit transparency and accountability with a call for unity that is equally necessary ... and it is not some pie in the sky dream and it is not some pie in the sky dream.

It's a practical step to getting the things we have to get done as a country get done together ... as i said on a past in december as i said on a past in december the bipartisan code 19 relief package was a very important first step first step.

I'm grateful for the democrats independent members of congress who came together to get it don ... but i said at the time is just a down payment is just a down payment.

We need more action ... .

We need more action, more bipartisanship , more bipartisanship.

We need to move quickly we need to move fast ... our rescue plan starts aggressively in order to speed up our national code 19 respons ... the vaccines offer somewhat sho were grateful to the scientists and researchers and everyone participated in the clinical trials are also grateful for the rigorous review and testing is not the millions of people around the world already been vaccinated safely ... but like i was just touching on his covenant 19 early land for the country at inauguration next week for the country at inauguration next week, $1.9 trillion a number so large it can or we rather had a rounded live everything in the unemployment protection.

Anothe step was to for most american families is the middle class and the working war and he wants to rebuild the economy after the eight 8 million jobs, good paying jobs to rebuild our infrastructure, manufacturing, relational 8 million jobs, good paying jobs to rebuild our infrastructure, manufacturing, relational, and on that later fights i uninstalled.
