(Part 1 of 4) Many colleges and universities will be sending their students home for an extended break after the Thanksgiving holiday to prevent further outbreaks of COVID-19.

We'll be right back.mi mississippi state, muw and the university of mississippi have sent students home for an extended holiday break.

The thought is that students celebrating thanksgiving with family members will not not return to campus and potentially spread covid19.

Colleges have been a petri dish for the coronavirus; now some are paying their students to prevent further spread.

Laura podesta has this story.

Biology major sarah kerns doesn't consider herself an instagram influencer.

"personally, i jus see myself as a college girl with an instagram!"

But earlier this year the senior at the university of missouri was chosen -- along with 5 other students - by an outside marketing firm her college hired to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

"they wanted t get the word out - so we were talking about ways people can protect themselves and their mental health."

A spokesperson for the university tells us this was the first time the school used an "instagra influencer" approach to reach the student body.

Christian basi says the month- long campaign started at the end of august and cost roughly 10 thousand dollars.

"it worked reall well -- we saw an increase in covid, active cases --they peaked at the beginning of september on labor day weekend, and after that we saw an immediate dramatic drop in the number of active cases."

"other schools like fordham university here in new york city - areusing their own social media accounts to reach students with pandemic safety messages especially as thanksgiving approaches."

This pledge, reading, "each o us caring for the whole of us," ha been posted to the school's public instagram page every few days this semester, generating thousands of likes.

Sarah says she could see putting her instagram account to work for the university of missouri again.

"i would be open t it.

You know, i'd have to agree with the campaign..."

Right now, the school says cases are contained... and the majority of students will be transitioned to remote learning following thanksgiving break.

When asked, the university of missouri said it would be open to having an outside marketing firm hire more students to influence and raise awareness about other health issues on campus - for example education about drugs and alcohol or sex education.

Reports show hospitality, retail and ding are some of the hardest hit industries.

In san antonio, the hospitality business fuels traffic downtown- and it's leaving small businesses in a tough position.

That's why centro san antonio launched a new program --to help them.

Erica zucco has details.

What really fires up garcia art glass's owner, gini - "nat fire/working/etc" is telling stories through art- in ways never seen before.

1:45 we try to bring creativity and innovation all together under one roof, where we can solve problems creatively that skill's is key to survival for most san antonio businesses - especially in the heart of the city.

"nat break pre- pandemic, downtown staples like lula's mexican caf?

Depended on tourists, conventions and government workers for regulars and steady sales.

Now- lula 1:28 as you can see, it's slow, very slow- it's hard.

Right now i'm in the kitchen working because i can't afford to pay an employee working right now.

It's hard, but hopefully we'll make it owner obdulia gabriel started the restaurant with her husband, who she met at local favorite mi tierra more than 20 years ago.

She says she gets it.

Lula 2:10 i really don't want to be selfish.

It's up to them- they have to look after themselves.

It's hard.

I'm personally very, very, very protective.

Downtownplacema king nonprofit centro san antonio launched the main street program to connect businesses like garcia art glass & lula's with grant applications, marketing advice, resources- and each other.

Sylvia 1:25 initially we started out with triaging what we need to do to help businesses.

Now, what they call "navigators"- me businesses one on one and work to solve the problems they're facing.

Linda 6:15 .

I talked to a lot of businesses still paying employees- one was closed and they're still paying their employees- cause they didn't want to let them down.

It's a huge responsibility and there's just a lot of caring.

Centro workers are also downtown disinfecting, giving directions and sprucing the city - which lifestyle gift shop cadeaux on north saint mary's says has also helped.

Cadeaux 3:03 "they've been doin great on that / helping people feel safe and comfortable& / ambassadors say hi in the morning, spray the door, spray the windows, hi how are you& as centro's work continues, they're asking customers to mask up, space out and enjoy what makes these blocks unique.

Small business is really the soul of a community.

Without small business just imagine the ways in which we are able to buy or make contact with another person.

Businesses like these say they're ready to help you shop, create and eat safely.
