President trump will spend the next few days in walter reed medical center after he and the first lady test positive for covid - 19.

The two are in quarantine.

But dozens of aides, family members and even governors are being tested today after coming in contact with the president at a rose garden event.

That includes governor tate reeves.

Here's video of the governor at a rose garden ceremony with the president on monday.

Today, reeves posted on social media that he tested negative for covid-19.

He said...quote... "just wanted to be sure...better safe than sorry!"

The number of confirmed or probable cases of coronavirus in mississippi is almost 100- thousand.

And nearly 3-thousand people have died from it.

The department of health is reporting 672 new cases today and 20 deaths.

Hospitalization and icu continue to decline at hospitals across the state.

The number of people on a ventilator is only up slightly.

In our area, lee county is reporting the most new cases with 30.

Itawamba has 27 and lafayette has 20.

Usually, tents are already up in the junction... menus are made for tomorrow's tailgate and usually it's pork when arkansas in town.... but not this year... the junction and much of campus is empty.

Wcbi's stephen pimpo tells us what students think and what campus police will be watching for before kickoff.

"we are not allowing any tents to be set up, we are not allowing grilling on campus.

None of the traditional tailgating activities will be allowed."

Tailgating and sec football before 2020...it was almost unthinkable to have one without the other, but it's a choice schools like mississippi state have had to make amid the covid-19 pandemic.

"being in the junction, seeing the game happen, i mean, they're really down that they can't enjoy it like that but they're still going to do what they can."

Su: any other season, the junction would already be packed with tents in preperation for tomorrow's home opener.

"you would see a great land rush of people going out to secure their tailgating spot."

But not in 2020... per governor tate reeves's executive, the sea of tents and state fans lining up for the dawg walk won't be part of this football season.

Msu police chief vance rice acknowledges it will take time for everyone to adjust to the changes, but he's optimistic they will be successful.

"from other universities, we've heard that the fans have been very good about following the guidelines that have been posted by the cdc."

Davis wade stadium will only be at 25 percent capacity saturday, as mike leach makes his starkville debute as head coach of the bulldogs.

"the biggest change is if half my friend group is in the game and half my friend group is at home and wanting to make sure we're following those covid guidlines if we are at home and wanting to hang out together."

While chief rice is confident the msu student body will continue being safe, he says campus police will be watching for gatherings of 10 or more people on campus.

"there will be some people not following the line i guess, as you could say.

Maybe they'll stay away from the bigger crowd of people that are doing the right thing."

Chief rice believes the more people that do the right thing...the sooner things could get rice says no one will be allowed on campus tomorrow without a parking pass for the game and that masks are required.

First look stinger we're continuing to enjoy a nice streak of sunshine and cooler air, and that will continue over the next several days.

There could be a quick sprinkle through the afternoon especially closer the democratic candidate for u.s. senate in mississippi is meeting voters face to face in the final few weeks of campaigning.

Mike espy participated in a town hall hosted by the oktibbeha county branch of the naacp in starkville today.

Other elected officials joined espy on the panel, including state representative cheikh taylor, district attorney scott colom, and starkville mayor lynn spruill.

They all wanted to remind everyone there how important it is to vote.

" they deserve and information they deserve to look through candidates in the eye and the we will stand there before there and answer their questions.

It's about respect for the citizens , it's about making sure you can respond to their question in their issues and that's why i'm here.

" that's why i'm here.

" espy will face cindy hyde-smith in the november 3rd election.

Many of the people that work at the polls on election day are retired... across the country, there's a frantic effort to recruit a new generation to replace some older poll workers, who due to covid-19 health concerns are stepping back.

Cbs's major garrett has more.

The catawba county library in newton, north carolina has been poll worker bea sherrill's election day home for more than a decade.

1:14 mg: but you will not be doing that this year?

Bs: no i will not, to my sorrow.

Sherril's age and underlying health conditions make her vulnerable to coronavirus.

Bs: i decided that my doctor would have a voice in it.

// 1:40 bs: when i coronavirus.

Bs: i decided that my doctor would have a voice in it.

// 1:40 bs: when i raised the question with him, his face immediately said no.

2:28 mg: how sad does this make you?

Bs: i've shed many a tear.

// it's the people.

I miss the people.

áááá across the country, election administrators are racing to recruit enough people to staff voting precincts in a pandemic.

According to a 2018 study, more than half poll workers are 61 or older, putting many in an age group susceptible to the virus.

The bear minimum that we need is 37000 just to open the polls on election day.

Frank larose is ohio's secretary of state 239 we wanted to have that 50% extra as a reserve force in case there's a resurgence in the virus or folks choose not to show up on november 3rd so really what our target is 55,000.

That's meant creative recruiting tactics &.

Like allowing 17 year old high school seniors to serve as poll workers, encouraging businesses to give employees the day off and incentivizing charitable organizations to pitch in.

And there have been no shortage national appeals& we got to keep showing up at the polls, not just to cast our own vote but to make sure others can too.

And former president obama joined the cause this week...adding his voice to that of nba royalty.

Democracy doesn't work if just a few people do it.

22112 one of the silver linings to this whole pandemic experience as it relates to election administration is this will be the year that we recruited that whole new generation of poll workers.

Among that new generation is abby lublin&a first time poll worker in durham north carolina 0120 if we can't staff the polls, it's too easy of an excuse to close them.

So i don't want to give any excuse for voter suppression.

.

Like many poll workers this year, lublin has been taking training classes online and will be assigned to this elementary school on election day.

0218 you know, it's invisible work.

// 0128 and i'm doing it because i can.

I am incredibly lucky, incredibly privileged that i can do this and i think it's a time that we figure out what our capacity is and do whatever we can.

But when we come back, you'll meet one who won our contest.

Wcbi news at 6 will be right back.

Another deserving teacher in our area has an extra 500 dollars to spend in her classroom.

Jennifer pratt is a winner in our "wcbi back to school essay contest."

She teaches at the alternative school in houston.

Ms. pratt says because of budget cuts, supplies are usually limited in her classroom.

She often spends her own money to make up the shortfall.

Our viewers voted for her essay about how she would spend the extra money for her classroom.

The prize that was offered through wcbi and their sponsors opened up so many doors to provide my students with so many things that they need to succeed.

And that's what students need, the tools to succeed.

A representative from gary's pawn and gunn presented ms. pratt with her 500- dollar award today.

An eight year old is showing that it is possible to overcome obstacles with faith, family and friends.

Wcbi's allie martin introduces us to a young man who is teaching others about pushing through life's unexpected challenges.

Eight year old aiden woods is an inspiration to everyone he meets.

The tcps second grader was involved in an atv accident last year.

That resulted in a through the knee leg amputation.

Although he now wears a prosthetic , that doesn't slow him down.

Scott burns never thought about getting a "running blade" until he met aiden woods.

"i remember telling aiden, aiden, you can do whatever you want to do, i was sitting at home one night talking to my wife and i said , i tell aiden he can do whatever he wants to do, but i don't do anything, i decided to try running and being a little more active."

Nats eight years ago, burns had his left leg amputated below the knee after dealing with an injury he suffered while in the marines.

He adjusted to life with a prosthetic.

And last year, when he was a teacher at tcps, student aiden woods who was then six, injured his right leg in an atv accident.

His leg was amputated through the knee.

Burns helped aiden adjust to life with a prosthetic, encouraging him along the way.

Aiden is still able to play sports.

"baseball, basketball, soccer and a little football."

And burns says he's amazed at aiden's progress and perseverance.

"what he's taught me is to put more confidence in myself and my abilities and to use my injury as a way to help others."

Aiden's family also helps others.

Each year they organize a 5 k in sulligent alabama that raises money for appendix cancer research.

Last year, a one mile march was added to help buy blade runners for other amputees.

Aiden's mom says her faith has been strengthened since her son's accident.

"i think before, my relationship, with god was more of , i need, help with this, heal this, and now i have more , i see my boys running around and thank you god i have all four of my boys.

" close aiden is planning on taking part in the "aiden's army" one mile march saturday in sulligent.

He hopes a lot of friends and supporters will show up.

Allie martin, wcbi news you can find out more information about the 5 k and one mile march at the "appendix cancer 5 k" facebook page.
