:12-:15 colleen gaffney/nurse practioner :35-:47 dr. shilpi khetarpal/clevela nd clinic colleen gaffney spent two days in the hospital in march, fighting covid-19 and pneumonia.

Recovering over the summer, she noticed her hair was falling out in clumps.

3:53 when i would brush my hair after the shower the brush would just be full of hair.

The shedding continued through july and august - by september, she'd lost about 50-percent of her hair.

6:24 all through the front i can feel it and the actual thickness of my braids were much thinner overall at the cleveland clinic, dermatologist shilpi khetarpal has been seeing 20 to 25 patients a month with significant hair loss.

1:10 this phenomenon of hair loss is called telogen effluvium and all it means is a large portion of hair that's normally in the growing phase gets shifted to the shedding phase as a result of some major shock the problem is not unique to covid - it can be triggered by any shock to the system, physical or psychological, and generally begins 2 to 3 months after the trauma.

In the midst of the pandemic, covid is the major trigger.

People are just seeing hair, like on their combs, on their pillows on their clothes, on the floor.

The hair is just everywhere doctor khetarpal says the shedding should end within six months - and the hair will start to re-grow.

She suggests managing stress through yoga and meditation to help speed the process... or using over the counter minoxidil.

Gaffney also takes vitamin supplements and uses platelet rich plasma injections to stimulate hair follicles.

11:05 i got through covid, i'm feeling great and now this.

It's a little extra reminder of what i went through if hair loss is the only lingering symptom of the coronavirus, she feels fortunate - knowing it could have been even worse.

Mg, cbs news this type of hair loss typically has no other symptoms. for people who also have itching or pain, the doctor recommends coming in to have it looked at.

Intro covid-19 impacts are still huge in several ways.

// hundreds of mississippians remain in the hospital with symptoms, often times with few ways to talk with their family of their doctors.

// wcbi's stephen pimpoo tells us how some muw students are helping.// pkg "when you're sick the one thing you want to do is to have people with you.

You want to call a family member to just communicate that you're scared or frustrated."

Feeling isolated and alone are all too-common side- effects of the coronavirus.

For people in the hospital with the virus...the need for a ventalator or the toll the virus takes...can even..take away their ability to speak.

So mississippi university for women senior sarah williams and the school's chapter of the national student speech language hearing association decided to help give those patients a voice.

"i can't eve imagine not being able to have family there and having to struggle to communicate with the healthcare providers that you are able to be in contact with."

Sarah's aunt, a nurse a a southaven hospital, told her about the need for communication boards for covid- 19 patients at local hospitals.

"they have t clean them between each patient and they don't have enough quantiy to mach the number of patients that they are needing to serve at this time."

So sarah and her classmates made more.

Su: here's what these boards look like.

One side has symbols for specific requests while the other has a keypad to create specific messages.

Janette hreish , an instructor and clynical educator with the w's department of speech language pathology, designed to board to be versitile yet simple and not emotionally taxing for the patients.

"with one gestur or two gestures be able to build a message and communicate effectively and i wanted to include controls for their environment."

Like on, off or get the doctor.

There are also symbols for patients to express emotions, like fear, worry, or love.

"if i'm unable t get my needs met, i'm unable to get my emotional needs met, it might affect their willingness to keep fighting the disease as well."

The school created 200 of these boards for the students to pass out to baptist memorial hospital, oktibbeha county hospital and others acorss the golden triangle...to make sure their coronavirus patients do not feel alone?

"let our fello mississippians know 'we are in this together.'" ...without having to say a single word."

Tag those communication boards went out earlier this month and janette says they will continue to make more.// for organizations who would like to request boards from the w...you can find that information on our website...wcbi- tv.com.// months of being out of the classroom has taken a toll on many young students across the country.

Teachers, parents and the students themselves are trying to catch up with academics.

And as brooke katz reports, many are dealing with the emotional aftermath of isolation.

"now that we'r back in school, what we're seeing is a lot of our students are having emotional issues of what is occurred over the past couple of months."

Renee kotsopoulos is the director of health services for gisd...with so many parents having the same concerns- they wanted to offer one spot for answers.

"there were a lo of parents there that were asking a lot of good questions about their kids and about themselves too."

/chief medical officer at hazel health "we split th session in half for discussion and half for the lecture, to really provide parents with a good opportunity to talk to us."

Dr. robert darzynkiewicz is the chief medical officer at hazel health-- a telemedicine company that partners with gisd-- and schools across the country.

He told us many of the questions revolved around helping kids cope.

"understandin resilience, understanding that it's a skill, that routine, care, self-care, obviously playing games, having safe time to learn, really just building a structure that children already thrive in and knowing that it's just different this time."

Kotsopoulos says she hopes families will keep taking advantage of the service.

"this is jus another way to grab the attention of parents and families so that way they'll access the medical care that they need."
