This is the heartwarming moment a mother dog and her five puppies were rescued after being trapped in a flooded hole under a house during a storm.

Buddhist monk Suchat Pasantoe, 43, heard a dog howling from under his house behind a temple in Buriram, northeast Thailand on September 18.

Using a flashlight, he checked through the gaps of his house outside and saw the dog with his puppies trapped in a muddy tunnel.

He said: "I heard a dog crying during a rainstorm so I went outside to look.

They were all under the house and could not get out of the sticky mud." The stray dog is believed to have dug its way through the gap to shelter inside while it gave birth, but was trapped with its babies when it was flooded by a heavy storm.

Thailand was battered with heavy rain as Typhoon Noul reached Vietnam and moved towards the country last week.

The monk tried to pull them out but the animals were out of reach so he called the animal rescuers for help.

Rescue volunteers rushed to his home and began digging on the hole covered with sludge.

The digging went on for almost two hours until they were able to reach the muddy 10-day-old puppies and their mother.

The monk thanked the rescuers and decided to adopt the dog family.

He named the brave mother who did not leave her puppies Daeng.
