Monday marked the first day of school for the Rome City School District.

The district decided to go fully remote for 6 weeks to air on the side of caution.

First day of school remotely.

Its a decision the district says was a safe move.

Now today parents district wide are working to help their kids succeed with virtual learning news channel 2's brent kearney spoke to one family and district officials about the first day of school from a computer screen is where chloe and cameal reese begin their first day of school in rome.

"its a little bit hard at first but once you do it, its easy.

But i wish i could be at school with my teacher."

Their father chad reese..also a gym teacher in the district, trying to balance teaching his students and his kids.

.

None .

None chad says: "both as a parent and as an educator, its been a big change over the last several days and weeks."

Not only is he making their school lunches, he also crafted this custom desk for his kids "once i got word that rome was going remote, i got the tools out and built the girls a desk for the girls to do school."

He spent the day making sure the girls stuck to their schedules and helped with any technical questions his kids may have had.

A situation many parents district wide are nervous about.

Peter says: "each building has tech support available.

They've been working all summer contacting families as needed.

Every building has a specific email address that families can email to get in touch with that tech support."

Even though most students are learning from home the district still needs to report data to the state through the covid report card.

"what we are reporting to the state is the number of people that are in our facilities.

Both students and teachers and staff.

We also have to report students and staff that are learning off site so we have to report those everyday."

"now in terms of when these hallways will be once again filled with students blake says they're targeting towards the end of october to bring students back students that choose to."

"our goal is to have students back in school on october 26th.

And if we can find a way to start introducing our students a little bit earlier to help thege building.

You've got kindergarten who have not attended school so having them in an empty building will be ideal."

A day 1st grade teacher candace deroy is excited for.

"i'm so excited for them to come back i cant wait.

I think the school and the health department are going to do their job in making sure that everyone is safe and i'm not worried about it i'm excited.
