U.S. sanctions Russia-linked Ukrainian lawmaker

The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on a pro-Russian Ukrainian lawmaker linked to Republican efforts to dig up dirt on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter, accusing him of trying to interfere in the U.S. election.

This report produced by Chris Dignam.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on four Russia-linked individuals for trying to interfere in the U.S. electoral process, accusing Moscow of using a range of methods and actors in an effort that included the targeting of presidential candidates.

Among the four individuals is Andrii Derkach, a pro-Russian Ukrainian lawmaker, who the Treasury accused of using "manipulation and deceit" in an attempt to influence U.S. elections.

In December, Derkach met with President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani in Ukraine, as the former New York City mayor pushed for an investigation into Trump's Democratic challenger Joe Biden and a Ukrainian energy company, where Biden’s son Hunter was a board member.

The sanctions also targeted three Russian nationals that the Treasury said are employees of Russia's Internet Research Agency (IRA), which was indicted by former U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of his probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

Reuters reported on Thursday that Microsoft had alerted one of Biden's main election campaign advisory firms that it had been targeted by suspected Russian state-backed hackers, according to three people briefed on the matter.

The sanctions also come after a former official at the Department of Homeland Security filed a whistleblower complaint alleging he was pressured by Trump appointees, including acting secretary Chad Wolf, to stop providing assessments of Russian election interference because it could "make the president look bad." Representatives of the White House and DHS have denied the allegations.

‘Trump, Modi relationship will benefit both nations in future’: Donald Trump Jr

The relationship between US President Donald Trump & Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will benefit both the nations in the future, said Donald Trump Jr. ‘The Indian community understands that two democracies like that are together in a big fight against socialism and communism spreading all over the world so it’s been an honour to watch it,’ he said. Trump Jr added that the Indian community understand hard-work and have seen through the hypocrisy of the Democrats. He added that the Biden family is plagued by the same corruption that India faced once and added that the Indian community will not back the democrats in the upcoming polls. He also said that the reception that President Trump got in India during the ‘Namaste Trump’ event was overwhelming. Trump Jr was speaking after the release of his book Liberal Privilege and the event was organised exclusively for the Indian American community. The Republican party is hopeful that Trump’s tough stand on China and good personal ties with PM Modi will help them attract votes from the Indian community in the Presidential election. Future will be shaped by those who invest in science, innovation: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended inaugural function of Grand Challenges Annual Meeting 2020 via video-conferencing on October 18. Microsoft founder Bill Gates also interacted with PM Modi during the meet. During the virtual meeting, PM Modi said, "This meeting was to be held physically in India but in changed circumstances, it is being held virtually. Such is the power of technology that a global pandemic did not keep us apart. The future will be shaped by societies that invest in science and innovation. But, this cannot be done in a short-sighted manner. One has to invest in science and innovation well in advance. That is when we can reap benefits at the right time." He further said, "In India, we have a strong and vibrant scientific community. We also have good scientific institutions. They have been India's greatest assets, especially during the last few months, while fighting COVID-19. From containment to capacity building, they have achieved wonders. Today, we are seeing a decline in the number of cases per day and the growth rate of cases. India has one of the highest recovery rates of 88%. This happened because India was one of the first countries to adopt a flexible lockdown. India is now at forefront of vaccine development for COVID-19."
